The Final Fantasy 14 and 16 team is working on two new games and an announcement could be coming soon
The Square Enix team that made Final Fantasy 14 and 16 is now working on two new games, and there could be an announcement soon. Let’s see what has been indicated.
Square Enix published Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on PS5 and the second DLC of Final Fantasy 16, Rising Tides, in the first months of 2024. What can we expect going forward? According to what was revealed in an interview, the FF 14 Online team is now working on two new games .
Naoki Yoshida , director of FF 14 Online and producer of the sixteenth chapter, speaks directly on the topic .
Two new games under the leadership of Naoki Yoshida
In the interview (in Dutch and translated via automatic translator) Yoshida explains that the team cannot work on so many games at the same time, but aims to continue making the best possible. Additionally, he says there could be announcements “soon” on two games the team is working on.

Unfortunately, Yoshida didn’t want to say anything more, so it’s unclear what it might be about. Considering that he is still busy with Final Fantasy 14 and that work on Final Fantasy 16 has recently finished, we do not believe that the announcements are linked to a new chapter of the main saga.
One possibility is that Yoshida’s team is working on the much talked about Final Fantasy 9 remake . According to the most recent rumors , in fact, the project is in an advanced state and is being developed internally, although Square Enix initially tried to produce it with an external team. Furthermore, it is possible that one of the games will be a new smaller IP, although Square Enix has now decided that it is not interested in mid-budget products.
For now, however, it is only speculation and we will have to wait for an announcement. Maybe there is space during the Summer Game Fest Showcase?
