As you may have already read on our pages, we have explained to you what happens when you try to insert a PlayStation 4 game disc into the PS5 player : in this case, the game in physical format is read without any problem and it is possible to play just like if it were a PS4, without considering that in some cases the performance has even improved.
But what happens when you insert a PlayStation 2 or PlayStation 3 disc into the optical drive of the latest generation Sony console? The answer, simply, is nothing . Such an action accomplishes absolutely nothing. For those who don’t know, in fact, PlayStation 5 only enjoys backward compatibility with PlayStation 4 games and it is not possible in any way to start the disc versions of products belonging to previous generations.
Obviously there is no danger in performing such an action, since nothing risky happens . Very simply, the console is not able to understand what the contents of the disc are and will not show any game in the main screen box where you usually see the title present in the player.
We remind you that PS2 and PS3 games can still be played on PlayStation 5, but only under certain conditions. As for PlayStation 3 titles, the only ones that can be started are those available in the PlayStation Plus Premium catalog via the game streaming service. In the case of PS2, however, a series of titles reproduced in high definition with some improvements and support for trophies can be found both on sale on the PS Store and in the subscription service catalogue.
