The Gears of War: E-Day trailer is not in CG but in-game controversy ignites
The Gears of War: E-Day trailer that we saw yesterday at the Xbox Games Showcase was not made in CG, but in-game: there is controversy regarding the incorrect descriptions.
The Gears of War: E-Day trailer is not in CG but in-game : the game developers and the people who worked on the presentation are keen to point this out, especially in the face of incorrect descriptions that seem to want to diminish the value of what shown during the Xbox Games Showcase.
The controversy was sparked by a post by Geoff Keighley, presenter of the opening event of the Summer Game Fest, who described the trailer as ” a CG video created by Blur Studio using in-game assets from Unreal Engine 5 “.
Jamir Blanco, cinematic artist at Blizzard, responded by dotting the i’s: “Let me rephrase that a little better: The amazing Gears of War: E-Day trailer you saw ran in real time with models, textures and scenarios managed through Unreal Engine 5.”
“To say it was ‘a CG video made by Blur Studio’ is to discount all the amazing technical achievements that you probably didn’t even notice, it was so beautiful. Although it looks like one of Blur’s many pre-rendered trailers, it’s actually a real-time masterpiece that uses in-game assets and ray traced lights from the same graphics engine as the game.”
“I already see people saying ‘yeah, it was cool but it was just a CG trailer ‘ because of comments like this.”
Words are important
Although Blanco’s reaction was the harshest towards Geoff Keighley’s post, other people also tried to clarify the nature of the Gears of War: E-Day trailer in order to avoid spreading a misperception of what was shown at the Xbox Games Showcase.

Let me rephrase this a little better.. the amazing Gears piece you just saw was FULL REALTIME. With realtime models, textures, environments, etc. All within Unreal Engine 5. Saying it was a “CG from Blur Studio” diminishes all the technical achievements you probably didn’t… https://t.co/fsqqbZI728

Journalist Jez Corden, for example, wrote that many people are asking him if the trailer was pre-rendered due to Keighley’s tweet, but that from what he was told all textures, features, lights and physics they were in-engine, so much so that users will be able to experience them in the game as soon as it is released.
Xbox marketing director Guy Welch tried to provide all the necessary clarifications, thanking Keighley for the kind words and explaining that the trailer was developed by Blur Studio in collaboration with The Coalition using Unreal Engine 5, with models, textures , scenarios and in-game objects , which we will actually find in the game.
“This is the same approach used for the trailers of the first three chapters of Gears of War , which were created in Unreal Engine using in-game assets and presenting the actual capabilities of the graphics engine: a concept that we are pushing even further with the ‘Unreal Engine 5.’
