Manor Lords was one of the hits of the first half of this year, challenging many established city-building titles. It reached #1 on Steam’s favorites list, and Early Access sales reached 2 million copies. But another game, released just three days before Manor Lords and receiving very positive reviews, is actively vying for gamers’ attention. In its first major update, Bellwright has addressed a number of major issues that players have been reporting.

Bellwright is somewhat similar to Manor Lords, but with a slightly different approach. It’s also about city building and strategy, where you explore a medieval open world, establish a series of settlements, and gradually raise a militia to fight and overthrow a corrupt monarchy. The game is divided into three components. First, you explore the area in search of the ideal place to create a new village.

From there, you design, build, and maintain the town, recruiting locals to work in the shops, collect supplies, and guard the walls. Finally, you lead your army against the royal forces, capture an outpost, and again look for the perfect location for a new settlement – you can even connect them and create trade routes if you want.

The Bellwright Forestry update aims to address all the major issues raised by players so far. Firstly, it introduces a new building where you can grow saplings and use them to restore nearby forests – if you’re short on wood, this should help.

Secondly, it is now much easier to prepare companions and soldiers for expeditions. Instead of manually equipping them, you can send them to a new staging area where they will gradually fill up with all the necessary supplies before starting the campaign. The bakery’s bread productivity has been increased, and foods that cannot be grown, such as meat dishes, no longer spoil as quickly, making it much easier to supply villages with food.

Combat has been tweaked and there is now a separate food bag so you can store edibles without filling up your inventory. The full list of changes can be read on steam.
