A few weeks ago, Bethesda Game Studios released the Fallout 76 Skyline Valley update on the public test server. Now a hefty patch (about 27 GB on Steam) has appeared on live servers.

This is the first expansion of the open world map. While previous new locations such as Pittsburgh and Atlantic City took players to other locations, Skyline Valley introduces an entirely new area to the Appalachian map. Specifically, Bethesda added the Shenandoah National Park area south of the Frontier. Here, Fallout 76 players will find Vault 63, inhabited by ghouls.

The leader of Vault 63 is Hugo Stoltz, who was described by the developers as having a “particularly charged personality.” He is a friendly example of a new type of ghoul called the Lost, who tend to be wary of outsiders. During the new story, players will be able to either make friends with Stolz or betray him. A terrifying new enemy in Skyline Valley will be a trio of giant robots called Storm Goliaths, developed in Vault 63.

A significant amount of new content has also been added – twelve new quests, the same as in the previous updates Steel Dawn and Steel Reign combined. There are new factions, new creatures and new rewards. Finally, Skyline Valley is hosting a new public event called Dangerous Fun. In this event, players take on the role of a storm chaser who must activate a large lightning rod. The update also kicks off Season 17, which is themed around camp rewards.

Bethesda Game Studios also announced the next update for Fallout 76, Milepost Zero, which will be released this fall and will expand Skyline Valley. For example, the Blue Ridge Caravan Company has established a trade route on Skyline Drive and needs the help of adventurers to protect their Brahmin caravans. You can slap the Brahmins on the back to make them run a little faster.

Completing missions for the Blue Ridge Caravan Company will eventually unlock a caravan outpost for the player character, which can be decorated and can house exclusive merchants, similar to houses in Skyrim. The fall update will also add a Halloween-themed event called Mischief Night, but the most exciting new feature may be playable ghouls, which will appear in Fallout 76 in early 2025, likely amid interest in the character from the series played by Walton Goggins.

Ghouls will be unlocked at level 50 when the quest allows them to go through the mutation process. Ghouls have unique benefits against radiation, as well as “dozens” of unique skill cards that can be used in addition to existing perks. However, the new character change may not please some factions.

Finally, Bethesda has hinted that the addition of ghouls comes with a new challenging endgame activity that will be detailed later this year.

Considering that Fallout 5 won’t be released anytime soon, at least fans have something to keep them busy.
