Two titles are at the top of the preferences of editorial staff and readers for the month of May 2024: completely different experiences but similar quality.
Since May was particularly full of high-level releases, it was difficult to have a unanimous opinion, so it is not surprising that the results of the polls led to two different games of the month between the editorial staff and the public. Upon closer inspection, it was a rather extraordinary period in terms of variety and quality of the proposals, which included different types of titles both in terms of genres and production characteristics, including large games, indie titles, conversions, remasters and other. There are many new releases, but also notable sequels, demonstrating a particularly prosperous period in terms of releases on the market.
In all of this, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Portal emerged as games of the month for May , two titles that are decidedly opposite in style and atmosphere, but very close in terms of quality and impact on users. Considering the sum of the preferences, the two games in question have largely captured everyone’s attention, also reflecting the results of the polls on the most anticipated games of the month, but we must not forget the many valid proposals of this period, which they will certainly join the colossal backlog accumulated in this first part of the year, awaiting many other releases scheduled between now and autumn.

The amount of interesting indie games released in this period obviously influenced the internal voting of the editorial team , but in the end Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 emerged as the most appreciated title, although there was considerable competition from other games even much less known.

Even beyond the technological breakthrough offered by Ninja Theory’s new work, which represents one of the most evident evolutionary leaps in terms of graphics and sound design, it is precisely the experience as a whole that has had a notable impact on many of those who had the opportunity to try the Xbox Game Studios title. Despite clearly limited gameplay, the story, themes covered and pure audiovisual experience of Hellblade 2 remains a truly unique moment in the entire gaming universe.
The other game that stood out in a truly remarkable way is Indika , the particular indie by Odd Meter: the idea of a game whose protagonist is a nun engaged in a journey of self-discovery in the company of the devil is in fact already a premise of notable impact, and the construction of this strange adventure reflects a remarkable artistic and expressive vision.
It’s something never seen before, which deserves to be experienced by anyone who is open to narrative experiences that are quite out of the ordinary. In third place we find a tie between two other truly special indies: Animal Well , a bizarre metroidvania with a magical and fascinating atmosphere, and Lorelei and the Laser Eyes , a narrative puzzle adventure between dream and horror by those geniuses of Simogo.

This is one of the very rare times in which the result of the survey aimed at Multiplayer.it readers returns a tie for first place, something that has happened very few times in recent years.
The result shows Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door tied as the best games of the month of May, having earned the same amount of votes. As we said, these are diametrically opposed titles in terms of atmosphere and type of experience, but which share a truly exceptional level of quality, which places both above the rest of the monthly offer, which is nevertheless characterized by a notable amount of interesting games. It so happens that the hallucinating journey into Senua’s psyche and against internal and external monsters finds itself alongside the remake of an RPG starring Mario as the best games of May.
Considering that the two titles have absorbed the majority of the votes, the others find themselves at a considerable distance from the first place, but among these we can notice at least a couple of titles that stand out more clearly from the bottom. In second position we then find Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut for PC, conversion of the famous open world action game by Sucker Punch into a Windows version released during the month just ended and one of the most anticipated conversions from PlayStation.For those eagerly anticipating Jin Sakai’s adventure on PC, the title’s known value and positive adaptation work make it an experience you can dive into without hesitation.
The third place, also in this case, is Animal Well: the debut title of Billy Basso and the publisher Bigmode founded by the well-known YouTuber VideogameDunkey is an excellent interpretation of the action metroidvania which also manages to stand out for a strong original identity, which not easy in this crowded genre.
