Attention! Spoilers for the Fallout series ahead!

Fallout Fans Confused Over Possible History Rewrite in Amazon Series On Twitter, many are claiming that the show is trying to change the events of Fallout: New Vegas, the 2010 RPG from Obsidian Entertainment. Fans have come to this conclusion in part because the series contradicts the established Fallout timeline. New Vegas takes place in 2281, 204 years after the bombs fell. Meanwhile, the first season of the series takes place in 2296, 15 years after the events of New Vegas.

The biggest conflict between them comes in the sixth episode, where it is mentioned that Shady Sands, the capital of the New California Republic (NCR), was destroyed in 2277 – four years before New Vegas and the same year that the NCR fought the first Battle of Hoover Dam.

In the series, the NCR was scattered due to the destruction of Shady Sands, becoming a disparate group trying to rebuild civilization. The show also doesn’t clarify whether we’re talking about all the remnants of the NCR or just a small group. Because of these inconsistencies, fans believe that Fallout: New Vegas has been retconned since Bethesda itself did not directly work on New Vegas.

Bethesda design director Emil Pagliarulo tried to clear things up on X/Twitter by pointing to the official timeline, but that did little to satisfy puzzled fans who noted inconsistencies between the series and the game.

One user responds to this:

Okay, cool. It’s just that in the series, ahem… an important event happens in 2277, which definitely had to affect Fallout: New Vegas. The only way to reconcile this is to move the event date to a period after New Vegas and chalk it up to a typo.

Fallout: New Vegas was created by many of the developers of Fallout 2, which further rooted it in the lore laid down by the creators of the franchise, Black Isle Studio. Bethesda has long been keen to put its stamp on the series, starting with Fallout 3, fueling unconfirmed rumors of friction with Obsidian, although they now share the same owner, Microsoft.

Either way, the timelines clearly contradict each other, and Bethesda executive producer Todd Howard considers the series canon.

Therefore, we will wait for official comments. But the series of events is definitely confusing.
