After years of waiting it seems that the comedy classic Spaceballs is about to have a sequel, with Mel Brooks taking care of the production.

According to a new report from The InSider, confirmed by the Hollywood Reporter, a sequel to the legendary parody film Spaceballs is in production . It will be produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Josh Gad and original writer Mel Brooks .

Gad, best known for being the voice of Olaf in Frozen and LeFou in the live-action Beauty and the Beast, is expected to star in Spaceballs 2 , as well as produce alongside Brooks. He also wrote part of the screenplay, written together with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, with Josh Greenbaum (Strays and Becoming Bond) directing. For now there are no details on the plot. We don’t even know the definitive title. Kevin Salter is expected to be the executive producer.

Few details

Samit and Hernandez are known for writing the screenplays for Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Detective Pikachu, for which a sequel is in production . It was known that they had been working with Gad for a few weeks, although it was not clear for what purpose.

On June 7, Gad shared a post on Instagram that many immediately linked to Spaceballs 2. He commented on it by writing: “I just turned in a script that I think might be the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on and I’m so damn excited. Working with my boys, @cubanmissiledh and @benjisamit, it was heaven on Earth and on many other planets too. Love you guys!”

Mel Brooks meanwhile has blown out 97 candles and it’s nice to see him still active in similar projects, even if we imagine that his contribution to the new film will be limited. His name is linked to some of the most famous parodies of the 70s, 80s and 90s and some of his films are considered true classics in the history of cinema, such as Junior Frankenstein , The Crazy Story of the World, Robin Hood : A Man in Tights and Spaceballs himself. The original film, which mainly parodied Star Wars, had in its cast actors of the caliber of John Candy, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, Joan Rivers and Brooks himself.

Spaceballs 2 doesn’t have a release date yet , of course. Let’s hope it’s an inspired film. There is a need for it, after years of science fiction series and films that are pure rubbish.
