The Fallout series didn’t need visual effects to create the Wasteland – the showrunners found the perfect location in life. The Fallout series from Prime Video turned out very well from a visual point of view. Although some moments had an intimate feel, the wild desert setting did not require the showrunners to use graphics experts – because the wasteland was found in real life.

Instead of pouring sand under a green screen, The Wasteland was filmed in Namibia on the Skeleton Coast. In this part of the desert stands Kolmanskop, a ghost town filled with the ruins of once beautiful houses, like the one Lucy enters in the second episode.

The dry climate of the Namib Desert preserves not only the ruins of these houses, but also their interiors. The former mining town, located in a part of the desert known as the “no-go zone”, was completely abandoned by 1956, and in 2002 a private company running ghost town tours turned it into a tourist attraction.

Actor Aaron Moten, who played Maximus, says:

We were truly transported to a desert setting. The sands of Namibia became our filming location. That first feeling – I remember walking out and starting the scene. This eliminated a lot of the work that an actor sometimes has to do. I obviously believe in where we are. I felt like I could immerse myself in the scene again and go deeper into the story.

And season 1 takes place in a destroyed Los Angeles known as New California. It is quite possible that in season 2 we will see the Mojave Wasteland.
