Sony bet big on Helldivers 2 doubling the game’s budget and development time
Sony doubled Helldivers 2’s budget and development time, demonstrating its strong belief in the game before its actual launch.
Sony was very confident in the possible results of Helldivers 2 , the cooperative shooter from Arrowhead Studios, so much so that it doubled the development budget , as well as the development time, bringing it to almost eight years in total.
This was revealed by the president and creative director of the studio Johan Pilestedt on the occasion of Nordic Game 2024, who told how Helldivers 2 should have been ready in three years , but in the end it took almost eight. Meanwhile the number of developers has grown from 35 to more than 100 people. During the process, the developer and publisher agreed that doubling the budget would be better for the project.
The choice ultimately paid off, with the expected peak of around 150,000 players far exceeded by the actual figure of 750,000 players recorded after launch.
Controversial choices
Pilestedt also touched on how the announcement of linking Steam and PSN accounts for the PC version of Helldivers 2 backfired on PlayStation, with the community organizing itself by bombarding the game with negative reviews on Steam , so much so that made it become one of the most criticized on the platform. Fortunately the situation has resolved and now things have improved enormously.
