SEA OF THIEVES MADE A SPLASH ON PS5 BUT MANY PIRATES HAVE ALREADY ABANDONED SHIP

The arrival of Seas of Thieves on PS5 was a success , as confirmed by the PlayStation Store sales charts which saw it at the top in both April and May. According to a report from True Trophies, in any case, it seems that many players have already abandoned ship , not a very positive sign for a live service game.

Based on data from over 3.1 million active accounts on the PlayStation Network provided exclusively by the analytics and tracking agency Game Insights, True Trophies claims that Sea of Thieves for PlayStation 5 lost 58.66% of players between May and June 2024 . This is an important wake-up call for Microsoft, as a live service game like Sea of Thieves needs a stable player base, despite having sold a lot at launch.

According to True Trophies, the peak of active players was reached on Sunday 5 May , therefore five days after the launch on PlayStation 5 on April 30 . Since then, the user base has continued to decline steadily, reaching its minimum on the last day of the survey, 9 June 2024 , during which -58.66% was recorded compared to the launch week.

In this type of video game, a decline in the number of active users is anything but anomalous , on the contrary, it can be considered physiological, however in the case of Sea of Thieves it appears rather consistent, since we are talking about abandonment (permanent or temporary, this is still to see) of more than half of the pirates . It would be interesting to know Microsoft’s expectations to understand whether this decline was expected or whether it also caught the Redmond company off guard. It must also be said that data of this type can be very fluctuating, since a new special event or the start of a new season is enough to bring the number of active users back up.
