Taking inspiration from the discussions regarding the specific leaks of Nintendo Switch 2 , Digital Foundry journalists question the actual benefits offered by the adoption of a screen with 1080p resolution.
During the latest podcast held by DF to illustrate the results of the tests conducted on the Starfield mods that unlock the framerate on Xbox Series S , the collective of tech enthusiast journalists opened a window on the Nintendo universe to focus on the specifications of Switch 2 and on the hypotheses linked to the adoption of a Full-HD screen for the next family of hybrid consoles from the Kyoto house.
According to the editors at Digital Foundry, using a 1080p screen may not be the best choice , for a variety of reasons. In fact, the DF team believes that Full-HD resolution could compromise the image quality of video games of the current generation of Switches running in backward compatibility (if there were any)
To solve the problem of the blurry image caused by the upscaling from 720p to 1080p, according to DF Nintendo should force Switch 2 to run backward compatible Switch video games in dock mode , a solution which however is considered not to be optimal depending on the critical issues represented, for example, by the optimization of individual titles and the readability of interface elements.
The Digital Foundry team, consequently, believes that 720p should represent the optimal choice for Nintendo, both as a function of the image blurring problems caused by running the games of the current Switch in backward compatibility on a Full-HD screen and of the wider performance margin guaranteed to developers, especially with regards to the level of graphic detail achievable with games run in Portable mode on Switch 2.
