Helldivers 2 is looking for a second game master to help Joel rule the galaxy
The team running the galactic war in Helldivers 2 is about to double in size as Arrowhead is recruiting an additional Game Master to assist Joel, the unseen creator of Helldivers 2’s meta-narrative.
The new position has the same title as Joel – Game Master, but with a focus on “metagame design”. The new game master will have to “lead an exciting and evolving campaign that responds to, anticipates and challenges players across the community.”
Helldivers 2 is looking for a second game master to help Joel rule the galaxy
Key responsibilities as described by Arrowhead :
- Conducting a live galactic war, including customization of master orders, personal orders, modifier effects and the LAMS library
- Maintaining “military instances” on all backend environments and regular communication with the backend team
- Monitoring community comments outside of the game with the MarCom team (marketing/community)
- Inconvenient work hours are expected: less as tools and automation improve, however the Game Master role includes crisis management as needed
This job requires a willingness to take immediate action, comparable to jobs that require time-sensitive decisions, such as a trauma surgeon, firefighter, or rescue pilot. It’s not surprising that Joel needs help – it’s hard for one person to bear all the responsibility for the galaxy.
The vacancy also includes “specialized” responsibilities that Joel likely wants to delegate to the new employee:
- Work on improving galactic warfare and with the backend team to improve wizard tools
- Responsible for the gameplay design of galactic warfare and create design briefs for systems and features related to it
- Work with backend and gameplay coders to ensure project goals are met.
- Working closely with the UX/UI team to continually improve the user experience of Galactic Warfare
- Offer a list of key telemetry to understand community activity
- Monitor community activity, player retention, and galactic warfare using telemetry
Arrowhead is looking for candidates with a minimum of five years of experience in the games industry as a game designer, preferably on service games or multiplayer games. Knowledge of backend game design and system design is also required, and experience in board game development will be an advantage. Working in Stockholm, Sweden is preferred, but a hybrid format is also possible.
While Arrowhead is recruiting for future chapters of the galactic war, the current chapter is slowly moving toward completion. This week the community is divided between unlocking anti-tank mines and rescuing children, but an automata super-colony, Cyberstan, appears on the horizon.
