GOD OF WAR: WHO IS KRATOS’ GRANDFATHER? RISE AND FALL OF A TITAN

The God of War saga was born from Kratos’ desire for revenge but soon also transformed into a family affair , like the vast majority of stories that have to do with the gods (Greek and otherwise). In addition to his father Zeus, the Spartan also finds his grandfather on his path : have you understood who we are talking about?

Who is Kratos’ grandfather in God of War?

In a world of gods, monstrous creatures and powers beyond imagining, Kratos’ grandfather is very different (and much larger) than the figure some might expect. This is none other than Cronus , leader of the Titans and responsible for the generation of the Olympian gods together with his wife Rhea. Cronus is therefore the father of Zeus and consequently the grandfather of Kratos.

Cronus was born to his father Uranus and his mother Gaia on the Isle of Creation, just like all the other Titans. The Sisters of Destiny also lived in this legendary place, primordial divinities capable of weaving the threads of time and reading the future. When the Titans chose to abandon the Isle of Creation to rule the mortal world, the Sisters prophesied to Kronos that his kingdom would be overthrown by his own children . In an attempt to avert this unfortunate future, Cronos decided to swallow all his children, but his wife Rhea managed to save Zeus by deceiving Cronos and making him swallow the Stone of Omphalos. Once an adult, Zeus thought it best to take revenge: first he freed all his brothers from his father’s womb, including Poseidon and Hades, and with the help of the latter he started the Great War , which saw the Gods prevail and the Titans end exiled to Tartarus .

So we come to the God of War saga . Kratos’ path intersects with that of his grandfather Kronos several times. The first in God of War (2005), when Kratos goes to the Temple of Pandora which Kronos is condemned to transport on his back to the Desert of Wandering Souls. Much of the progenitor of the series is set precisely in this labyrinthine place, where the Spartan is called to recover Pandora’s Box to acquire the power necessary to defeat the god of war Ares.

The destinies of the two intertwine again in God of War II at the Steeds of Time, where Crono appears to Kratos giving him the power of Crono ‘s Wrath , which consists of powerful electric discharges.

The last encounter takes place in God of War III and has a much more tragic outcome. To propitiate him is Hephaestus, the blacksmith of the gods, who asks Kratos to recover the Omphalos Stone from Crono’s stomach with the promise of forging him a very powerful weapon.

Once he lands in Tartarus, the Spartan is immediately attacked by his grandfather, who blames him for Gaia’s death. An inevitable battle of gargantuan proportions breaks out between the two, one of the most beautiful boss fights of God of War III and of the entire saga , which ends with the final death of the gigantic titan Crono.
