Fallout 4: a video from Digital Foundry analyzes the next-gen upgrade on PS5, Xbox and PC,Digital Foundry has put the next-gen upgrade for Fallout 4 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC under its magnifying glass.

Digital Foundry has published a new video comparison, this time featuring the free next-gen update of Fallout 4 released last week on PS5, Xbox Series

As for what’s new on console, the patch notes mention two main graphics modes on console: a dynamic 4K 60fps performance mode with “standard” settings and a 4K 30fps quality mode with high graphics settings, comparable to Ultra on PC. In addition to these two basic options, Bethesda also adds other modes for those running the game at 1440p and/or 120Hz

However, the Xbox Series details to keep the framerate stable. In short, “It just works”, Todd Howard would say.

However, as demonstrated by Digital Foundry in the video, in reality switching from the Quality to the Performance preset and vice versa does not bring any changes in terms of resolution, performance (60 fps) and image quality and details on the screen. The same also applies to Series S, which runs at a dynamic resolution between 1080p and 1440p and 60 fps regardless of the preset used.

On the contrary, on PS5 the option works as it should, with the Quality mode actually lowering the framerate to 30 fps, but offering better object rendering, foliage quality, distance draw compared to the Xbox Series from this point of view it also loses comparison with the Xbox One

The 60 fps target is reached by all consoles, but drops around 50 fps have been noted in some more difficult areas to manage, which in any case should not excessively compromise the gaming experience.

A disappointing update on PC

Despite some problems, the console versions of Fallout 4 have obtained great benefits from the next-gen update. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the PC version . As confirmed by Digital Foundry, support for ultrawide screens is poorly maintained and presents various interface problems and even visual bugs, without bringing any significant improvements to the graphics sector.

The biggest problem however is that the update made a large number of mods incompatible . Not surprisingly, a mod has been created to undo the changes in the update .
