Capcom Legend Reminds Gamers That Assassin’s Creed Shadows Isn’t Real
Assassin’s Creed Shadows has had its fair share of troubles since its announcement. Not because it looks bad, and not because it’s a bad game, but because it features a black protagonist. Shortly after the game’s first trailer was released, a vocal group denounced the game as propaganda, slamming the video with hundreds of thousands of dislikes.
While it’s hard to gauge the scale of the “historical freedom,” the uproar was enough to prompt Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot to issue a statement condemning the “hateful acts” directed at the game. Now, another veteran developer who has made his mark on games from the Street Fighter, Mega Man, Resident Evil, and The Legend of Zelda series has come forward to remind those who complain that “This game is fantasy, not reality.”
Speaking on his YouTube channel, industry veteran Yoshiki Okamoto said he was aware of the “backlash” Assassin’s Creed Shadows has faced, but decided to look at things from a “more positive perspective.”

Okamoto argues that having two protagonists, a black man and a woman, is a good thing and will encourage players to “think about which character and playstyle would be more beneficial for certain parts of the game.” He compares Shadows to one of his games, Genji: Dawn of the Samurai, which was also set in a similar time period and had two protagonists.
When it comes to Shadows’ gameplay, Okamoto’s most pointed criticisms center on his dislike of the negative reaction the game has received:
Even if Oda Nobunaga’s family crest is upside down, it’s just Oda Nobunaga in the game, it doesn’t affect how fun the game is.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released on November 12 on PC and consoles.
