Assassin’s Creed Shadows: this is how big the map is

Ubisoft has revealed how big the Assassin’s Creed Shadows map is, making a comparison with another chapter of the series.

How big is the Assassin’s Creed Shadows map? According to Simon Lemay-Comtois, associate game director at Ubisoft Quebec, it is more or less the size of that of Assassin’s Creed Origins , the chapter of the series set in Egypt.

“It’s more or less like the one in Origins, so smaller than the one in Valhalla in terms of territory covered,” Lemay-Comtois explained in an interview with VGC. “In Japan there are bodies of water, but not like in Greece in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which was half made up of water. This is not the case in Japan. There are coasts and Lake Biwa is really big, but the map is the same size as the one in Origins.”

An adequate map

Naturally, the development team created a map that reflects the real territory in which the game is set: “in Japan there are more mountains, more hills and more valleys. The team that went to make inspections on site discovered that things the most interesting ones are in the valleys . There are some really beautiful temples on top of certain mountains, but most of them are steep and difficult to climb and there is no reason to go there.”

One of the places you can visit in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

According to Lemay-Comtois, the map reflects the dimensions of the story Ubisoft wants to tell . Shadows takes place in 16th century Japan, in a time of unification. “The story is mostly set in the central area of Japan, so we didn’t expand to the entire territory.” The team then created some of the most important places related to the story and then designed the map to make the distances believable, without pretending that it takes entire days to go from one place to another as in reality.

For the rest, we remind you that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released on November 15, 2024 on PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5.
