A new “medieval” Doom will be announced in June – the release will take place on PC, PS5 and Xbox

According to a new report, the next big Doom game from Id Software and Bethesda will be announced in just a couple of weeks. However, it seems that this new installment of the popular first-person shooter will not be a traditional sequel, but perhaps a prequel showing the origin of the series’ main character, Doomslayer.

Insider Gaming reported that it has learned of plans to reveal the next game in the Doom franchise at the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase on June 9.

This is the same Doom game that was previously rumored to be codenamed Year Zero. According to new information, the final title will be Doom: The Dark Ages and has been in development for at least four years.

Insider Gaming claims that last year they heard the first details about the still unconfirmed game and learned that it would be set in the “world of Doom with medieval inspiration.” The publication suggests that the previous codename Year Zero and the title The Dark Ages, along with the mention of the Middle Ages, may indicate that the next part will be more of a prequel or an origin story for the protagonist. This sounds logical and could be a fun way to keep the series fresh and varied. In addition, this is a good opportunity to make a kind of restart of the series – since in Doom Eternal we have already reached the core of the universe. Moreover, Doom with a medieval style corresponds to what the developers of id Software told us at the beginning of 2020 in a private conversation about the Doom universe.

As for the release, the game will most likely not be released in 2024, but could appear in the first half of 2025. And, judging by the latest insights, Doom: The Dark Ages will also be released on PS5
