Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is aimed at a “wider audience” with puzzles and stealth instead of shooting
Wolfenstein developers MachineGames are known for their stories and depictions of Nazi villains, which is what likely attracted them to Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. However, unlike the Wolfenstein series, which was dominated by gun-heavy gameplay, the new Indiana Jones game will be different.
In an interview with the Official Xbox Podcast, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle game director Jerk Gustafsson explained that the goal is to create a “true adventure game” aimed at a “wider audience” than their previous hardcore shooters. As a result, stealth and puzzle solving will often be the best options, and players will be more likely to engage in hand-to-hand combat than shooting when facing enemies.
We focused on staying true to Indy’s personality. He is an ordinary person, not a superhero. He has shortcomings, he makes mistakes, he stumbles. There is weight to his movements and we strive to convey the rawness of the action. At the same time, he is also quite athletic, an excellent fighter and very lucky.
This is what we focus on in gameplay. Indy solves problems smartly and relies on wits rather than the over-the-top fighting we saw in Wolfenstein. Thus, by choosing a more authentic stealth game or a classic fist fight, the player will receive advantages and, more often than not, a very interesting and challenging experience.
MachineGames also discussed a variety of topics, including the game’s locations (College, Himalayas, Egypt, Thailand, Vatican City, and more), the introduction of classic characters we haven’t seen before, working with Lucasfilm to ensure the game’s authenticity, Troy Baker’s performance as Indy, and much more.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be released on PC and Xbox Series later this year. The latest trailer can be viewed here .
